I finally made it to matinicus. I had to spend multiple days there because the bad weather wasn't allowing me to leave. Id like to thank both my mentors Mr. Witzel and Mr. Friedell. I also like to thank my dad with helping me build the boat and Ms. Das for being patient with me. lastly id like the thank Severn School sailing for donating me an old fj rig.

I brought the mast home to my house to work on it but its been hard to fit the shouds on. Also Ive also started to plan for the trip in Maine.I talked to Mr. Sitzman and he said he had an extra FJ mast that I could have. Im going to try to see if I can jerry rig in to the boat. Other then that I haven't done much.Right now I'm just working on trying to figure out a new mast because the one that I made originally doesn't point at all. Im thinking that I want to try to get a metal 420 mast. The only problem with this is that ill need to put in shrouds to keep the mast from snappingAt this point the boat is all done and ready to be sailed again for the trip in Maine. So mostly what Ive done is plan out the logistics of the plan. I plan on leaving right after my AP physics 2 exam to go straight up to Maine I was thinking about seeing if I can get my boat up the Maine before then because that would save a lot of time. It would really help if the boat was ready to go right when I got there because I don't have as big of a time window as I was hoping.During this time frame the biggest thing that I did was repaint certain parts of the boat. I had already repainted the red bottom paint but there was still the white paint on the sides and the blue ish deck paint. I painted both the white and blue and also have started to plan out my trip in maine
For the past two weeks mostly what Ive been doing it trying to get familiar with using the sextant and the almanac. Ive been practicing it on land looking out over the water. When it warms up I plan to do a local trip to get better practice with the sextant.During these couple weeks I didn't get much done on the boat but I did finish the rest of the videos about celestial navigation. After watch the rest of these videos I feel like a have a much better understanding of celestial navigation then I did last time.During these few weeks I wasn't able to do a lot of work on the boat because I was in Massachusetts but I was able to practice a lot with the sextant. I went to the white mountains in New Hampshire and was able to practice very easily because there were so many stars out. |
